I. A SURVEY OF THE COLLEGE

Beijing Chinese Language and Culture College was founded in 1950. It is the unique college of higher learning in China that specializes in offering classes in Chinese language and culture to overseas Chinese including students from Hong Kong and Macao. The College also promotes cultural exchanges and friendly relationships between China and other countries.
The College has a faculty of experienced teachers with a deep love of teaching Chinese and with an understanding of overseas Chinese students. Currently, the College has received more than 40,000 students from 48 countries and districts around the globe. Over 1,000 overseas professionals have come to the College to exchange ideas on the methods and materials of teaching Chinese language.
Academic facilities, which are well stocked with a rich store of learning materials, include language laboratories, an audiovisual practice room, an Internet room, a multimedia room, a library, a reference room and a reading room. Recreation facilities include a basketball playground, a gymnasium, a dance hall, a billiard room, and a table tennis room. Double bed room facilities include central air conditioner, telephone, color TV, bathroom with hot water. Shared facilities in the building include washing machines and electric stoves. Convenience facilities include a multifunctional hall, an Internet room, a cafeteria, a laundry room, a clinic and a student store. A motorcade of the College is always ready to serve the students for sightseeing trips.
This year, Beijing Chinese Language and Culture College offers three different courses of (I) Chinese language mastery curriculum: including elementary, intermediate and advanced programs. (II) An educational enrichment program: summer and winter expeditions to places of interest all over China. (III) A professional program : training overseas teachers of Chinese language.

II.A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO CHINESE LANGUAGE CLASSES

A. Entrance Procedures
1.Semester Calendar
Fall semester runs from September to January, 2003.
Spring semester runs from February, to July, 2003.
2.Admissions:
Overseas Chinese and foreigners with Chinese origin at the age of 18 to 40 ,who are either graduated from senior high school or have the same educational levels, and who must be in good health and have good behavior.
3.Time of Application
The College enrolls students at both spring and fall semesters in February and September. Applicants should submit a completed application form and a copy of high school diploma or equivalent to the Admission Office before July 1st for the fall semester and
January 10th for the spring semester.
Students who are accepted will receive an Admission Notice before August 10th for the
fall semester and February 10th for the spring semester.
4.The Application Fee
The application fee is US$30 per person ,which is submitted with the college fees after arriving at the college..
5. Registration Procedures
1) New students should register during the specified time.
2) Bring the following:
a. Admission Notice of the College.
b. Passport (Students must have obtained an “X” student entry visa at the Chinese
consulate of his or her country).
c. Previous educational transcripts.
d. Photos required:
Five copies of one-inch .
Four copies of two-inch .
6.Physical Exam
Upon admittance, new students must take a physical exam at their own expense by a designated medical authority. Anyone found to be unsuitable for study at the College should make immediate plans for departure. Those who have received physical exams before entering China must show their original medical certificates as proofs.

B. Curriculum
At present, Beijing Chinese Language and Culture College offers 14 courses in Chinese
language, and additional elective courses in Chinese culture. Each of the one-year language
programs is at least 800 class hours per year; the elective courses in Chinese culture are at
least 80 class hours per year. The College also organizes frequent tours and special sessions
to enhance an understanding of Chinese history and culture.
After registration, each student will take an entry test to assure proper placement accord-
ing to his or her ability level: elementary, intermediate, or advanced. At the end of the semes-
ter, all students will be required to take Examinations for completion of the courses and to
ake an exit test, the HSK( the official Chinese Language Proficiency Test).
At graduation, certificates of completion and diplomas will be issued to all students who
have passed the above examinations along with an official HSK certificate specifying the
level of language achievement.

1. Elementary Level of Chinese Language Study
Main courses: Intensive Reading in Chinese, Extensive Reading in Chinese, Chinese Speaking and Listening Comprehension ,Writing of Chinese Characters .
Students will master 2,411 common Chinese words (written and spoke) and 185 basic
Chinese grammar items. Students will carry on simple conversations in Chinese. Students
will read and write simple sentences in Chinese.

2. Intermediate level of Chinese Language Study
Main Courses: Modern Chinese, Chinese Composition, Listening Comprehension, Chinese Conversation, Reading of Selected Newspaper and Magazine Articles, Watching, Listening and Speaking, Commercial Chinese.
Students will master 2,850 Chinese words ( written and spoken). Students will master
about 80 Chinese grammar items of intermediate level. Students will converse fluently in
Chinese.
3. Advanced Chinese Language Study
Main Courses: Modern Chinese, Advanced Chinese Composition, Reading of Selected Newspaper and Magazine Articles, Advanced Cultural Knowledge. Advanced Commercial Chinese, Chinese Grammar.
Students will master about 2,800 Chinese words and about 100 Chinese grammar items of advanced level. Students will understand basic theories of Chinese language and essential cultural background.
Students will qualify as Chinese language secretaries, Chinese translators and teachers
of Chinese language.
4. Specialized courses, lectures and presentations in Chinese culture Specialized courses include Traditional Chinese Painting, Chinese calligraphy, Wu Shu( Chinese Martial Arts), Chinese Music and Dance, Chinese Language Computer Programs.
Lectures may be presented on such subjects as Beijing Opera, Chinese History, and
Chinese Geography. Presentations on other Chinese subjects of interest may also be sche-
duled.
C.College Fees
College fees are US $ 1,950 per semester. This fee covers tuitionUS$1,100, including textbooks, educational materials , field trips, recreation and dormitory room US$850.

III. SUMMER AND WINTER EXPEDITIONS
A. Entrance Requirements:
1. A minimum of 16 participants must sign up for summer and winter expeditions. Each
expedition is limited to a maximum of 35 participants.
2. Students and outside groups must apply two months in advance (outside groups must
notify the college 15 days ahead of arrival time to confirm arrangements and to ensure that
a college bus meets them at the airport).
3. Participants are responsible for their own international round trip tickets including the
airport tax.
4. Expeditions in Beijing only will be US $ 40 per day per person.
5. Overseas Chinese groups, or students and faculty of overseas Chinese schools may form
unscheduled summer and winter expeditions. Please contact the Student Office for specific
details, including travel and accommodation information.

B. Curriculum of the Summer and Winter Expeditions
The purpose of the summer and winter expeditions is to enhance an understanding of
Chinese language and culture through meaningful travel.
The expeditions include selected activities in many areas of Chinese life, including music, dance, calligraphy, painting, martial arts, abacus, handcrafts, and many other interesting fields.
In the Beijing part of any expeditions, major historical sites will be visited (the Great Wall, Tian An Men Square, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Temple of Heaven, and so forth). The participants will also visit villages, factories, and schools. All summer and winter expeditions have as their primary purpose the learning of Chinese language and culture.
1.The Beijing—Chengde Summer Expedition.

The Expedition’s final destination is Beijing.
2.The Beijing—Xiamen—Guangzhou Summer Expedition.

Quanzhou (Qingyuan Mountain, Kaiyuansi Temple),
Fuzhou,

Shenzhen (Splendid China, Folkways Village, World Window),
The Expedition’s final destination is Shenzhen.
3. The Beijing—Qingdao Summer Expedition.

5. The Beijing—Sichuan—Guangzhou Summer Expedition.

IV. SUMMER SHORT-TERM CLASSES
(July ,20—August ,20, 2003)
1. Curriculum
Elementary Chinese, Intermediate Chinese, Chinese Speaking, Listening Comprehension,
Extensive Reading, Chinese Music, Wu Shu (Chinese martial arts), Chinese Painting.
Chinese Calligraphy, Arts.
Students will have their Chinese Courses from Monday to Friday, and go sightseeing in
Beijing on Weekends.
2. Application Procedures
Students over 15 years old may apply individually before July,1.
A. Student groups must apply 45 days in advance.
B. Individual students or the student groups must notify the College 10 days ahead of
arrival time to confirm arrangements and ensure that a college bus meets them at the
airport.
3. Fees
US$ 1,100 per student.
4. Students should apply an “L” visa for 60 day’s duration.
